NASTY NAMASTE- Cleaning Your Dirty Yoga Mat

Let's just say, I'm no Yogi. Do I love yoga? Absolutely. Do I abuse the shit outta my yoga mat? Absolutely.

You see, I ordered this beautiful light mint Lululemon the Mat once upon a time. It looked like this......
Pretty right? Yeah, it was. Now, after years of abuse and misuse it looks like this...
Yep. Disaster. A yoga crime if you will. What you're looking at is years of sweating, jumping, lunging, squatting, and wearing black soled sneakers LOL. Yep.

Let me first say, if you're going to use a mat like this for multiple purposes ie. Wearing sneakers on, then choose a darker color. My first regret right there. Secondly, clean your mat once a week!! Not once a year like this girl. Dispicable.

The damage now is pretty much irreversible, BUT, what matters is that it's clean and hygienic.

It will remain to look this way until I figure out a safe way to remove scuff marks, but to clean it was actually pretty simple.

This type of mat is a closed cell top and open cell bottom meaning, the top is rubberized and sweat wicking it tends to get more slippery than open cell mats but is easier to clean. The bottom being open cell is grippy and permeable. The sweatier it gets the stickier it gets. Tends to harbour bacteria though so should clean it often.

Lululemon suggests cleaning once a week with a vinegar and water 50:50 ratio sprayed on and wipe off. Them once a month soak in bath and clean with vinegar and water and let dry for three days. Soap will break down the cells and also could make slippery if use too much so eat yoga mat is different. Find out what's best to use for what brand and type of mat before starting !! Natural cleaners tend to be safe and gentle across the board.

Looks like this baby is out of commission for a couple days now hanging to dry but much needed. It was getting slippery with dirt sweat and grime.

Hope you have success wth yours and can catch it before it gets too abused like my poor mat. Again, the next once purchased will be darker in color in case I use shoes on it.
