ANTI-AGING: DOES YOUR NECK REALLY MATTER?

Okay woah. Scary. So, I posted this photo on my fitness page on Facebook: Shape Up With Sheppy and got some inbox questions regarding putting this chocolate face mask on my neck!!! 

Do you cleanse, moisturize, exfoliate and mask your neck too???? Have you even thought about it or is it something you neglect? 

The skin on your neck and décolletage is delicate, and if you’ve exposed it to sun, if you’ve smoked, if you haven’t cleansed, exfoliated and moisturised it the way you have your face, the chances are it is, or will become, wrinkled.... So many people neglect their neck and that's one of the biggest signs of aging!! 

Now I'm not saying that you can completely reverse it or prevent it but here's some ways that you can help take care of your skin on that area!! 

1. Moisturize & Cleanse your neck!! 
In the shower in the morning don't stop at the jaw line with your FAVORITE cleanser!! Continue down your neck and use gentle circular upward motions being sure never to pull and press too hard. The same goes for your face too and especially the eye area!!! Exfoliate as well, if you do your face once a week apply the same to your neck! It will help turnover the skin cells and reveal that new healthy skin! 

2. Avoid prolonged sun exposure/ use Sunscreen
Age spots, wrinkles, discolouration, so many side effects from prolonged sun exposure. We often neglect our necks and faces too when it comes to sunscreen especially us women who wear makeup with SPF, but what about the neck? We've all seen those women with the blood red chest and think "ouch!"  Yes it's painful, but also so much damage has been done when burned. 

3. Sleep with a low pillow
This seems wierd right? Like, does it really make a difference which pillow I use?? Well, it can!! A higher pillow, or pillows stacked increases the angle of the neck and can lead to increased wrinkles in that area!! Also, satin pillowcases- great for less wrinkles on face and eye area and keeps your hair from getting all shagged up (just a bonus tip there). 

4. Keep hydrated!
Drink enough water!!!! That's something I'm aweful at and constantly try to get better at! If I drank has as much water as I did coffee i'd be alright! Water hydrates giving the skin more elasticity, which helps fight against dry, wrinkly turkey neck syndrome!! 

5. EXERCISE! 
Okay what? Now I'm just being silly. Nope actually for reals. Try some neck exercises!! It actually can help a lot! 

TRY THESE EXERCISES: 
(When you're alone. Don't do in public. I repeat: DO NOT DO IN PUBLIC) 

1. Move your chin out and also then move your lower jaw forward. You should feel the skin tightening underneath the jaw. Repeat ten times.

2. Start with head in neutral position. Look upwards and hold that position for 10 seconds. Return to neutral position. Repeat this 20 times.

3. Form an ‘O’ with your mouth. Pull down the sides of your mouth until you feel the muscles underneath your neck tighten. Repeat this quickly three times. Take 5 seconds break and repeat for 10 sets of three. 

So there you have it! Take care of your skin!!! It's so much easier to prevent damage than it is to reverse the damage!!
